Visionary art , the art of visions ,
can be traced back to some of the first mark making found in caves throughout the world. It is an essential part of our nature to depict our inner realms and experiences so that others can both share in our interdimensional space as well as follow us there.
What are the creatures that inhabit this space?
From Dragons, Unicorns, Harpies and Sea Monsters to yet unnamed Chimera,
mythical creatures live in the wilderness of experience and the wilds of our psyches.
For this class, students will select one Visionary Beast to paint. We will focus on anatomy and references to render a life-like mythical creature using the Mische Technique.
The preferred technique of many of today’s and the last century’s top visionary artists, the Mische Technique is a layering of multiple mediums to create an image out of highlights rather than shadow. Krisztina Lazar specializes in a very specific version of the Mische Technique, which she has been teaching for many years.
Artists may draw inspiration from the rich mythology of different cultures to create their own interpretations of mythical creatures, blending traditional and contemporary elements to produce captivating and thought-provoking artwork. Such a concept could result in a diverse range of artistic expressions, each offering a unique perspective on these legendary beings.
This class is for beginners to advanced students alike. Whether you have never painted a creature before or you paint fantasy animals all the time but are new to the Mische Technique, there will be something for you in this class.
-RECOMMENDED MATERIALS-
- 16” x 20” canvas to paint on
- Titanium White casein
- Liquin Original
- Red Ochre Acrylic paint
- Indian Yellow Acrylic paint
- Light Blue acrylic paint
- Extra paint brushes
- Paintbrushes
- Sizes you will need: At the minimum, please have a 0, 1, and 2 round, medium sized filbert, larger 2” flat brush. You can definitely bring more brushes than this. I highly recommend looking online or in a good art store like Blick for a set with this range of brushes if you don’t already have these. I also highly recommend not getting the cheapest ones. Always get the best art materials you can afford.
- Oil paints:
- A basic color palette should include: Titanium white, Mars Black, burnt umber, indian yellow, cadmium yellow, permanent rose, red ochre, prussian blue. The same goes for paints as for brushes. Do not get the cheapest ones. An affordable brand can be Windsor & Newton or even Gamblin artist’s series.
- Reference material:
- A picture of a living animal that is somehow related to the Visionary creatures you want to paint. Ex. If you are painting a Dragon, birds, lizards, horses and dogs could all be references, depending on the type of Dragon you would like to paint. Unicorns can be horses or goats and Griffins are eagles and lions.
- The picture or pictures need to be high resolution enough so you can see details

INSTRUCTOR
Krisztina Lazar
Krisztina Lazar is a visionary artist primarily working in oil paint and drawing. She is a Mische Technique lineage holder, a mixture of oil and egg tempera painting hailing from the Dutch Renaissance and revolutionized by modern master, Ernst Fuchs. This technique creates an opalescent under painting that the colors are then glazed over, rendering each painting out of light rather than shadow, bringing the images to life with fractal clarity.
Utilizing this transformative style she learned from the visionary Brigid Marlin, her current body of work explores a hybrid of Mische and Alla Prima to create the hyperealistic sacred art she calls Pop Shamanism. Pop Shamanism is images of portals and visions that embody today’s cultural climate of the occult, magic, psychedelics, meditation, pop, nostalgia, and the ongoing environmental movement.
Originally from Cleveland, OH, she completed her BFA at Carnegie Mellon University in 2004 and her MFA graduate degree in 2011 at the San Francisco Art Institute New Genres department. Her paintings have been exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the United States and Europe, most notably at the H.R. Geiger museum in Gruyere, Switzerland. Krisztina has also mentored with several other leading visionary artists of our time, including Martina Hoffman, Robert Venosa, and Alex and Allyson Grey. She teaches her unique styles of painting to many students in group and private settings. Her work has been featured in multiple articles, galleries and book publications. She currently lives and works in northern California.
